
Kate Wood '21 MM wins The 2024 American Prize in Voice
Boston-based soprano and alumna Kate Wood '21 MM has been named the 2024 winner of The American Prize in Voice in the Professional Opera Division, otherwise known as The Friedrich & Virginia Schorr Memorial Award. Kate was the selected winner from applications reviewed from all across the United States.
The American Prize National Nonprofit Competitions in the Performing Arts is the most extensive series of contests in the country, dedicated to celebrating excellence in the performing arts. It stands out for its unique scope and structure, aiming to recognize and reward outstanding performers, directors, ensembles, and composers across the United States at the professional, collegiate, community, and high school levels, all based on submitted recordings.
Kate has performed an abundance of operatic roles such as Lucy in The Telephone (Angels Vocal Art), Venus in Venus and Adonis (Cambridge Chamber Ensemble), Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance (Marblehead Little Theatre), and Madame Herz in The Impresario (Winter Harbor Music Festival). She graduated from NEC in 2021 with her Master of Music in Vocal Performance. With the NEC Opera Theater, Kate performed the roles of Tamiri in Mozart’s Il re pastore, Lady with a Hand Mirror in Argento’s Postcard from Morocco, as well as excerpts from title roles in Handel’s Theodora and Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice.
