Meet Paul Mardy '20 MM
New York native Paul Mardy is a woodwind specialist and visual creative based in Washington, D.C., available for projects worldwide. He frequently works in Los Angeles, New York, and Boston, maintaining steady clientele, specializing in commercial, editorial, and studio portraiture.
"I'm particularly excited to share my current project, 'Black Professionals,' which documents and celebrates select individuals from the African diaspora working in various fields," Paul shared. "Through intimate portraits, I'm capturing their 'day in the life' experiences to inspire young audiences and challenge existing stereotypes. This project aims to provide representation and create a valuable resource showcasing the diverse career paths being forged by Black professionals across industries."
Paul's work has garnered recognition in renowned publications such as Vogue Magazine, Complex, and The Boston Globe. He has collaborated with major brands like Cartier, WeWork, and Nike Swim. His photographic journey has also been shaped by his travels with various touring performing arts groups, capturing music and dance across over 25 states and four continents.
"My musical training unexpectedly shaped my photographic style—I approach portraiture like a composer or conductor, with light as my instrument," Paul explained. His background in music allows him to bring a nuanced approach to music photography, as evident in his work with organizations such as the Chamber Music Society, The University of Arizona, and The Boston Philharmonic. "I'm especially grateful for my time at The New England Conservatory, learning from esteemed faculty. It was during those years that I honed the discipline, curiosity, and artistry that continue to shape my career."
His passion extends beyond his artistic projects. "I'm passionate about educating and giving back to the photography community," he said. "I recently hosted a lighting masterclass in New York, sponsored by Think Tank Pro and B&H Photo, drawing participants from as far as Michigan and Boston. Additionally, I've partnered with a nonprofit to support small business branding with my photography, helping tell their unique stories.
