NEC Alumni and Faculty Sweep Top Honors in the 74th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll
NEC has once again demonstrated its dominant force in contemporary improvisational music, sweeping top accolades in the 74th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll across both main and Rising Star categories. From master big-band arrangers to historical icons and avant-garde innovators, artists affiliated with NEC continue to define the state and future trajectory of jazz.
Leading the main categories, Vancouver-born composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue ’02 MM was named Arranger of the Year. Celebrated for propelling jazz orchestration into the 21st century with his big band Secret Society, the former student of NEC faculty legend Bob Brookmeyer earned praise from DownBeat for his "compositional acumen and conceptual ingenuity." Meanwhile, the poll inducted the late pianist and composer Jaki Byard into the Veterans Hall of Fame. Byard, who taught at NEC for over fifteen years, was lauded by DownBeat for commanding the full history of jazz piano "through his fingertips," with former student Fred Hersch '77 remembering his lessons as "serious fun."
The influence of NEC was equally pronounced across the Rising Star categories, led by current faculty member Anna Webber, who won Rising Star Composer for "unifying compositional discipline with raw improvisational energy." NEC alumni dominated the remaining instrument categories: Brandon Seabrook '99 took top honors as Rising Star Guitarist for his "kinetic brilliance," Kim Cass ’07 won Rising Star Electric Bassist for his "astonishing agility and unique harmonic voice," and Willy Rodriguez ’14 MM tied for Rising Star Percussionist, recognized for his "explosive drive" in bridging Afro-Caribbean rhythms with modern jazz.
This remarkable achievement is a testament to the institution's rich artistic tradition, celebrating an extraordinary community where legendary mentors, world-class faculty, and visionary alumni continuously inspire one another to reach new creative heights.
