Alexander Hersh ’15, ’17 MM Featured in The Strad

Cellist and NEC alumnus Alexander Hersh ’15, ’17 MM has unveiled a dynamic new project that bridges the worlds of music, film, and visual storytelling. Designed to extend the reach and impact of a musical premiere far beyond its initial live performance, Hersh's innovative initiative explores fresh ways to build immersive visual worlds around new compositions. At the center of this project is composer Paul Novak's piece, Variations with Sand in the Gears. To accompany the music, Hersh created a narrative short film that begins as a conventional performance video before morphing alongside the score's shifting intensities.

The project recently caught the attention of The Strad, which published an insightful feature diving into Hersh's creative process, the risks involved in blending distinct artistic mediums, and strategies for engaging audiences in the digital age.
