Violist Dana Kelley ’14 MM Appointed Associate Principal Violist of the National Symphony Orchestra

Alumna Dana Kelley ’14 MM has been appointed as Associate Principal Violist of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in Washington, DC. This prestigious role marks a significant milestone in Kelley’s already impressive career, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to her craft.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, Dana studied viola under the guidance of Kathryn Plummer and violin with Cornelia Heard. She further honed her skills at the New England Conservatory, earning her Master’s degree with the renowned Kim Kashkashian. Her passion for chamber music led her to the Argus Quartet, where she completed an Artist Diploma in String Quartet Studies as the 2017–2019 Graduate Quartet in Residence at The Juilliard School.

Kelley’s career has been marked by a series of notable achievements, including being a 2014–2016 Fellow in Ensemble Connect, a highly selective performance and teaching program co-sponsored by Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute. As a member of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Kelley continues to contribute to the world of chamber music at the highest level.

In addition to her work with these esteemed ensembles, Kelley has earned top prizes in prestigious competitions, including the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, the Sphinx Competition, the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, and the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. Her performances have captivated audiences at notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Merkin Recital Hall, collaborating with celebrated artists such as Nobuko Imai, Miriam Fried, Ralph Kirshbaum, and Astrid Schween.

As the NSO embarks on its 94th season under the baton of Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda, Kelley’s appointment as Associate Principal Violist adds to the orchestra’s legacy of excellence. Her rich and beautiful tone, combined with her vast experience, promises to be an exciting new chapter for the NSO and the broader classical music community.
