James Gaffigan ’01 Named Music Director at Houston Grand Opera
James Gaffigan ’01 has been appointed Music Director of the Houston Grand Opera (HGO), becoming only the fifth person to hold the position in the company’s 70-year history. He will begin as Music Director Designate in the 2026–27 season before assuming the full role in 2027–28, joining HGO’s leadership team alongside General Director and CEO Khori Dastoor ’02, also an NEC alum.
As announced by the company and reported in The New York Times, Gaffigan will work with Dastoor to continue advancing HGO’s mission of presenting world-class opera to audiences in Houston and around the world. His appointment marks his first Music Director title with an American institution.
An internationally acclaimed conductor, Gaffigan currently serves as General Music Director of the Komische Oper Berlin and recently completed his tenure as Music Director of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain. He has conducted at many of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra National de Paris, and Vienna Staatsoper, as well as major symphony orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Gaffigan made his American operatic debut with HGO in 2011, leading the company’s production of The Marriage of Figaro. He has since returned for multiple engagements, including conducting the HGO Orchestra at the annual Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers Concert of Arias, and is currently in Houston for performances of Porgy and Bess.
Originally from New York, Gaffigan earned his Master’s degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music after completing his undergraduate studies at NEC.
Congratulations to James!
