Rachael Price ’07 Featured in The Boston Globe with Musical Partner Vilray Bolles
Rachael Price ’07 is back in the spotlight after being featured in The Boston Globe for the release of West of Broadway, the newest album from her project with guitarist and songwriter Vilray Bolles. The piece highlights the duo’s distinctively New York–infused sound and the artistic chemistry that has shaped their collaboration across several releases.
The new album leans into classic jazz stylings and character-driven storytelling, drawing inspiration from the Great American Songbook tradition. Literary nods, vintage musical language, and a distinctly metropolitan energy color the project, which the Globe describes as shaped by the personalities and pace of New York City. Both Price and Bolles now call the city home, Bolles as a native New Yorker, and Price as a Brooklyn transplant following the rise of Lake Street Dive, the acclaimed band she co-founded while in Boston.
The feature also revisits the origins of their partnership at NEC in the early 2000s. Price and Bolles met in NEC’s jazz studies program, where they explored wide-ranging musical ideas before eventually reconnecting to form their duo. Bolles studied at NEC in 2003, and his time at the Conservatory played a role in shaping his early artistic voice and his long-standing connection to Price.
