
Thomas Wilkins '82 MM receives Gold Baton from the League of American Orchestras
Congratulations to New England Conservatory alumnus and Trustee, Thomas Wilkins '82 MM, who received the Gold Baton from the League of American Orchestras at the closing session of the League’s 2022 Conference on June 3. The Gold Baton recognizes individuals and institutions that champion and advance the cause of orchestras and symphonic music throughout the country.
Thomas received his Master's Degree from New England Conservatory in Orchestral Conducting, and his Bachelor's Degree from the Shenandoah Conservatory. Thomas is the Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Artistic Advisor, Education and Community Engagement; and at the close of the 2020/21 season, he ended his long and successful tenure as Music Director of the Omaha Symphony.
He is the recipient of several awards including the prestigious Outstanding Artist Award by the Nebraska Arts Council Governor’s Arts in 2014, Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award by Boston's Longy School of Music of Bard College in 2018, the Dreamer Award from the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in 2019, and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Music from the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards in 2022.
His commitment to community has been demonstrated by his participation on several boards of directors. Currently he serves as chairman of the board for the Raymond James Charitable Endowment Fund and as national ambassador for the non-profit World Pediatric Project headquartered in Richmond, VA, which provides children throughout Central America and the Caribbean with critical surgical and diagnostic care.
