Published on May 2, 2023

Joseph C. Borsellino III is a Massachusetts-born professional saxophonist, composer, and educator. He has degrees in Jazz Composition from Temple University (BA) and New England Conservatory of Music (MM). In 2021, Joseph was awarded the inaugural ISJAC Emerging Black Composer Prize for his suite, “The Police State,” which has been performed and broadcasted by WDR Big Band.

On April 16th, 2021, Joseph released his second EP, “Last year was a beautiful, terrible mess,” a collection of collaborative projects recorded throughout 2020’s extensive quarantine and social isolation. He enjoys teaching and freelancing in the Boston area, where he performs original music with his jazz trio.

Why did you choose NEC?
After completing four years at the Preparatory School (2012-2016), I wanted to return to NEC for my Master's Degree. The prestigious faculty, history, rigorous curriculum, and emphasis on creativity were all factors in my enrollment as a Jazz Composition major at NEC.

What have you been up to since graduating from NEC? What projects have you been working on? Do you have any goals you are looking to accomplish?
Since graduating from NEC, I’ve had the privilege of assisting NEC's Cultural Equity & Belonging department, as well as directing my alma maters, the Dedham High School and Middle School Jazz bands. At the end of 2022, I finished a string quartet commissioned by NEC alumnus Ryan Truesdell ’06 MM for an album and performance series soon to be released. In January 2023, I was selected as a Young Composer Showcase Selectee for my big band piece, "The Lalibalotch Sing at Dawn" at the 14th annual Jazz Education Network Conference. My piece was performed by the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors. In my spare time, I write and record new music at home and am gearing up for another album release in the near future.

What are some of your favorite memories from your time at NEC?
I thoroughly enjoyed supporting the Black Student Union (BSU) during my time at NEC, and consequently, meeting some of my closest friends. Additionally, I look back fondly on my work and preparation each week for the Jazz Composer's Workshop Orchestra. I learned many valuable lessons through this experience and most significantly, how to push myself through pressure and deadlines. The support of my peers and teachers was especially reassuring and helped me write some of my best work in my career.

Share a story about one of your favorite faculty or studio instructors.
My lessons with Ken Schaphorst ’84 MM were the most informative experiences I have ever had in the realm of composition, and I owe a deep amount of gratitude to him for his patience, diligence, and compassion. Ken had a special way of helping me realize my ideas to their fullest potential without distilling my voice from the music. I enjoyed our conversations about traditional Ethiopian music, Herbie Hancock's electric-era, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and so much more.

How have your NEC experiences shaped your artistic approach?
My experiences at NEC have contributed to immeasurable growth and confidence in my craft and artistry. Using the resources and techniques I acquired at the conservatory, I have been able to construct a musical identity true to my character and influences that is bold and forward-thinking. I feel that I am better able to express my experiences, personality, and activism through my writing in tangible ways and, more importantly, I have the courage and musical charisma to trust my ideas.

Share any other stories about what has inspired you at NEC and beyond.
I was inspired by the small but fast-growing community of producers, electronic musicians, and DJs here at NEC. The select occasions I was asked to DJ events at NEC and/or incorporate electronic elements into group improvisations were uniquely special. The feedback and support these musicians shared with me, particularly concerning my EPs under my producer alias "Calo," reinforced how inseparable this aspect of my music is from my composing and arranging, and has encouraged me to continue melding these practices. I look forward to listening to all of the music this community has to offer!

Do you have any advice for young musicians/current NEC students?
Take advantage of all NEC has to offer. Get involved in clubs/organizations and events, and use the library’s resources! But do not limit yourself to the campus. Explore Boston, learn the MBTA, make connections with local musicians, and get plenty of sunlight.
