
Alumni Angela Chan ’22 MM, ’24 AD and Kyumin Park ’19, ’21 MM Receive Top Honors at Joseph Joachim Violin Competition
Two alumni, Angela Chan ’22 MM, ’24 AD, and Kyumin Park ’19, ’21 MM, achieved top honors in the prestigious Joseph Joachim Competition in Germany. Angela shared the first prize with a performer from the Curtis Institute of Music, while Kyumin was awarded second prize. This triennial competition is widely regarded as one of the most esteemed in the classical music world.
Angela is celebrated for her sensitivity and exceptional tone, winning top prizes in major international competitions like the Singapore International and Michael Hill Violin Competitions. She has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras, including the Staatskapelle Weimar and Singapore Symphony, and toured the U.S. with the Curtis Chamber Orchestra. Angela is also a founding member of the award-winning AYA piano trio. She received her Master of Music and an Artist Diploma in Violin Performance from NEC, studying with Donald Weilerstein.
Kyumin is a prize-winning violinist who has earned second prize at the 2019 Max Rostal International Music Competition and the 2018 International Music Competition in Harbin, China. As a soloist, he has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and NEC Philharmonia, and plays a 1740 Dominicus Montagnana violin, generously provided by the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation. While at NEC, Kyumin studied with Donald Weilerstein, and earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Violin Performance.
In addition to the top prize winners, two other NEC alumni, Felicitas Schiffner ’23 MM, ’24 GD, and Nicholas Hammel ’24 MM, were among the 21 selected participants in this year’s competition.
