Dr. Lauren Bernofsky ’92 MM Headlined University of Toledo’s Spring Festival of New Music

The University of Toledo’s Department of Music hosted its annual Spring Festival of New Music on April 2-3, featuring award-winning composer Dr. Lauren Bernofsky ’92 MM as the guest composer. The festival culminated in a free public performance on Thursday, April 3, at University Hall’s Doermann Theatre, showcasing works by Bernofsky performed by the University Chorus, University Orchestra, and Symphonic Band.

Dr. Bernofsky’s diverse portfolio included choral and orchestral compositions that had resonated with audiences worldwide, gracing esteemed venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and Grieg Hall in Norway. Her involvement in the festival offered students a unique opportunity to engage directly with a living composer, enriching their educational experience. Dr. Jason Stumbo, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music, shared,

“We were thrilled to welcome Lauren Bernofsky for our annual Spring Festival of New Music. Working with a living composer was an incredible learning experience for our students, and we were excited about the additional outreach opportunity that we provided to our area high school music educators through an open rehearsal and master class.”

In addition to the evening concert, Dr. Bernofsky led an open rehearsal on Wednesday, April 2, in Doermann Theatre, inviting area high school music directors and others to observe and engage with her creative process. She also conducted a master class at on Thursday, April 3, in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall, providing further insight into her work and compositional approach.
