In a heartfelt moment at this year’s San Francisco Conservatory faculty convocation, Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs Jonas Wright presented the Sarlo Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching to Paul Welcomer ’85 MM, longtime trombone faculty member and Director of the Brass Choir at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM).

The Sarlo Family Foundation Award, given annually, honors educators who demonstrate exceptional teaching, mentorship, and lasting impact in the lives of students. It continues the legacy of George Sarlo, a Hungarian Jewish immigrant who came to the United States in 1956 and dedicated his life to philanthropy and education.

A revered member of the San Francisco Symphony since 1994, Welcomer’s professional journey includes roles as Principal Trombone with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the United States Air Force Band. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the Eastman School of Music before completing his Master’s at the New England Conservatory. He is also a founding member of the Bay Brass, in addition to his nearly three-decade tenure at SFCM.

Welcomer’s unique blend of artistry, mentorship, and community spirit has made him a cornerstone of the Conservatory experience. This award celebrates not just a distinguished career, but a teacher whose influence extends far beyond the classroom.

Congratulations Professor Welcomer!
