New England Conservatory’s 154th Commencement Ceremony took place on Sunday, May 18, in the storied setting of Jordan Hall, where graduates, faculty, families, and alumni gathered to celebrate a new generation of musical artists.

The Class of 2025 was represented by Tianyi Timothy Ren '25 MM, who offered a moving student address that captured the perseverance, growth, and artistic courage that defined their years at NEC. His speech, rich with gratitude and hope, set the tone for a morning full of reflection and celebration.

Two distinguished alumni Ellen McLain '75, '77 MM and Dr. Mark Tse '15 MM returned to lead the ceremony as 2025 Alumni Marshals, donning regalia and posing in Jordan Hall before guiding the processional.

This year’s Commencement Address was delivered by Chad Smith '95 NEC/Tufts, '98 MM, President and CEO of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Drawing from his wide-ranging experience in arts leadership, Smith spoke passionately about the evolving role of musicians in shaping cultural and civic life.

Honorary Doctorates were awarded to Smith, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, renowned film composer Conrad Pope '73, and NEC Life Trustee Wendy Shattuck '75 each recognized for their exceptional impact on the arts and broader society.

Representing the alumni community, WCRB producer and host Brian McCreath '90 MM addressed the graduates with warmth and encouragement. As the voice behind the Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts from Symphony Hall and Tanglewood, McCreath offered reflections on storytelling, legacy, and the lifelong journey of a musician.

The 154th Commencement was a fitting sendoff for the Class of 2025, an afternoon steeped in tradition, shared purpose, and the music that binds the NEC community across generations.
