The Boston Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Andris Nelsons have announced the promotion of violinist Sophie Wang ’18 MM, ’20 GD to associate concertmaster, effective at the start of the 2025 Tanglewood season. In her new role, Wang will hold the Robert L. Beal, Enid L., and Bruce A. Beal chair, endowed in perpetuity. She will also serve as associate concertmaster of the Boston Pops, in the Edward and Bertha C. Rose chair.

Wang joined the BSO in 2022 and now steps into the associate concertmaster position following the promotion of Alexander Velinzon to first associate concertmaster last summer. As associate concertmaster—the third-ranking seat in the first violin section—she will be seated in the second stand, filling in for the concertmaster or first associate as needed.

Before joining the BSO, Wang held positions with the South Carolina Philharmonic and Columbus Symphony Orchestra. She is a former Fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center and has appeared at prestigious festivals including the International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove, Taos School of Music, and Sarasota Music Festival.

Wang earned both her master’s degree and graduate diploma from the New England Conservatory and holds a bachelor’s degree from the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, where she received the Woodruff Award. Her principal teachers have included Malcolm Lowe, Donald Weilerstein, Sergiu Schwartz, and William Terwilliger.

We commend you, Sophie!
