As it approaches its 80th anniversary, the Juilliard String Quartet (JSQ) welcomes a new chapter with the appointment of Leonard Fu ’19, ’21 MM as second violinist. He succeeds Ronald Copes, who concludes a distinguished 28-year tenure with the ensemble and will remain a member of the Juilliard violin faculty.

Leonard Fu now joins both the quartet and the college faculty. His appointment brings fresh perspective to a group long celebrated for its artistry, innovation, and deep commitment to education.

He joins an ensemble comprising violinist Areta Zhulla, violist Molly Carr, and cellist Astrid Schween. Together, they uphold the JSQ’s reputation as one of the leading string quartets in the world, known for powerful performances, masterful interpretations of a wide-ranging repertoire, and strong mentorship of emerging musicians.

With this transition, the JSQ looks ahead to its future with a renewed sense of purpose. Fu’s appointment marks a continued dedication to excellence and artistic growth, as the ensemble prepares for its highly anticipated 2025–26 season.

Congratulations, Leonard!
