Violinist Joshua Brown ’22, ’24 MM, ’26 AD to Appear on PBS’ Great Performances: Taking Note
Joshua Brown ’22, ’24 MM, ’26 AD will be featured on PBS’ Great Performances: Taking Note, premiering October 8 at 12 p.m.
Praised for his “richness of sound, elegance of reading… commitment of every moment at the service of the work” (La Libre), Brown is quickly establishing himself as one of today’s leading young violinists. The 2025 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient gained international attention after winning Second Prize and both Audience Awards at the 2024 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Other honors include First Prize at the 2023 Global Music Education International Violin Competition in Beijing and First Prize and Audience Award at the 2019 International Violin Competition of Leopold Mozart in Augsburg, Germany.
Since his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra, Brown has appeared with major ensembles including the Munich Radio Orchestra, MDR Sinfonieorchester, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Belgian National Orchestra. The Strad praised his “silky, weightless phrases that seemed suspended in time,” while Le Soir described him as “a real musician, of great sensitivity.”
A dedicated recitalist and chamber musician, Brown has performed at Festival Musiq3 in Brussels, Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, and the North Shore Chamber Music Festival, among others. He has received the Kronberg Academy’s Manfred Grommek Prize and is a Pirastro Artist, Yamaha Young Performing Artist, and Luminarts Fellow.
Brown is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma, studying with Donald Weilerstein, after completing both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at NEC. He performs on a Nicolo Amati violin (Cremona, c. 1635–1640), generously loaned through the Mary B. Galvin Foundation and the Stradivari Society.
