Published on March 20, 2025

Tamara Acosta '92 MM, an NEC alumna, acclaimed soprano, and advocate for historically excluded composers, has won a Grammy Award for co-producing Beyond the Years: Unpublished Songs of Florence Price. The album, which took home the award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, features soprano Karen Slack and pianist Michelle Cann performing 19 previously unpublished songs by Florence Price.  Florence Price is also an NEC alumna, earning two diplomas in 1906, one in Organ Performance and one in Piano Performance.

Tamara, Interim Director of the Voice Program at Cornell University and Assistant Professor of Voice at Ithaca College, co-founded ONEcomposer, an organization dedicated to amplifying underrepresented musicians. Her work on Beyond the Years stems from years of research and advocacy, including cataloging Price’s music and partnering with the Philadelphia Orchestra for a landmark performance of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement in 2021.

A celebrated performer, Tamara has appeared with Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Santa Fe Opera, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. With this Grammy win, she continues to make a lasting impact on classical music, bringing long-overdue recognition to historically excluded voices.
