
Luke Sieve ’23 Receives Tenure with The Cleveland Orchestra
Alumnus Luke Sieve ‘23, has officially been awarded tenure as bass trombonist with The Cleveland Orchestra, solidifying his position with one of the world’s most celebrated orchestras. Sieve joined the Orchestra in January 2024 and quickly established himself as a standout contributor to its distinctive brass section.
Originally from Flower Mound, Texas, Sieve began playing trombone in sixth grade and has since charted a remarkable trajectory through the orchestral world. Before joining The Cleveland Orchestra, he served as acting bass trombonist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra during the 2021–22 season and performed with such distinguished ensembles as the London Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra.
A student of James Markey, bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Sieve earned his Bachelor of Music in bass trombone performance from the New England Conservatory in 2023. He spent several summers honing his craft as a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and was a finalist in the Music Academy of the West’s Duo Competition in 2023. His growing list of accolades also includes first prize in the 2019 S.E. Shires Solo Competition at the Southeast Trombone Symposium and finalist honors in the 2018 George Roberts Competition hosted by the International Trombone Association.
Reflecting on his first season with the Orchestra, Sieve expressed gratitude and excitement: “Years ago, when this position opened, never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that this would one day be my job. The musicianship and sensitivity across the ensemble are without parallel, and I am constantly inspired by my new colleagues. I couldn’t be happier to have found my new home here in Cleveland.”
As he steps into his newly tenured role, Sieve’s artistry and collaborative spirit continue to enrich The Cleveland Orchestra’s tradition of excellence, and his journey from student to seasoned professional stands as an inspiring testament to dedication, talent, and vision.
