Lily Stern ’25 Awarded Fulbright to Study Music and Empathy in Paris

Published on June 10, 2025

Lily Stern ’25, a Tufts/NEC dual-degree student, has been awarded a Fulbright grant as a Harriet Hale Woolley Scholar. This fall, she will travel to Paris to study the lives and cello works of four French female composers—Nathalie Jaëll, Rita Strohl, Nadia Boulanger, and Betsy Jolas—through the lens of music and psychology. Lily shared that through the study of the composers’ lives and music, she hopes to create for audiences "a more profound connection to the music and to the women.”

Her interdisciplinary project explores how empathy can deepen musical understanding, combining archival research and performance. The Fulbright Program promotes international exchange and cultural understanding, and the Woolley Scholarship supports American artists in France.

Stern’s work continues her commitment to connecting scholarship, performance, and human connection through music. Congratulations!
