Wei En Chan ’18 MM Appointed Assistant Professor of Theatre at Allegheny College
Wei En Chan ’18 MM has joined the music faculty at Allegheny College as Assistant Professor of Theatre, beginning this academic year. He was hired in the spring and now brings his artistry and leadership to the liberal arts institution.
A countertenor from Singapore, Chan has been praised for the “time-stopping” beauty and technical finesse of his singing. He leads an active career in Asia and North America, performing lead roles in the works of Bach and Handel. Notable highlights include the title role in Handel’s Oreste with the Singapore International Festival of Arts, Ruggiero in Handel’s Alcina with The Opera People, alto solos in Bach’s Mass in B minor and St. Matthew Passion with Bachfest Malaysia, and Orlofsky in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus with the Singapore Lyric Opera. His interpretation of Ircano in Chatham Baroque & Quantum Theatre’s revival of Broschi’s Idaspe also earned critical acclaim.
Alongside his performance career, Chan has contributed significantly as an arts leader and advocate. He co-founded the Boston-based choral group Carduus, served on Early Music America’s Emerging Professional Leadership Council, and consulted with the Asian Opera Alliance. He was also founder and Artistic Director of Camerata Nova Anglia, a recital series exploring the stories of POC singers, supported by multiple grants and residencies.
Chan earned his Master's degree in Vocal Performance from NEC in 2018, where he studied with Dr. Ian Howell '16 DMA, and his Bachelor's degree from Ithaca College, where he studied with Professor Carol McAmis.
Congratulations, Wei En!
